Frequently asked questions.

What do i wear to a class?

You should wear clothes that allow for a full range of movement. You can wear yoga clothes or more flow-y style clothes. There are times when we are on the floor so you want to wear clothing that you would feel comfortable sitting and rolling in. I generally wear flow-y pants and a tank top, with an extra layer on top if it’s chilly outside. Generally once we get into the class, you’ll be plenty warm! We dance barefoot. If you need a shoe, you should wear a dance shoe that hasn’t been worn outside (e.g., a ballet slipper or dance sneaker).

what should I bring to class?

You may want to bring a water bottle. Depending on the temperatures, layers of clothes can be helpful. Otherwise, just yourself!

what should i expect during a class?

Although each class will be slightly different, there is a structured flow to JourneyDance®. Broadly, you should expect to move freely with guidance from the facilitator but without specific steps. You cannot possibly do JourneyDance® “wrong”. There are no mistakes in JourneyDance®; it is a place for you to explore and be creative with your movement. The beginning and ending parts of a class are slower with more gentle energy. The middle section can be vigorous with much higher energy music.

In terms of the specific structure, first, we begin with a welcoming and embodiment. During this section, we move from standing to sitting to lying on the floor. We are connecting with our own bodies and with the earth that supports us. Second, we transition to a section with more energy and expansion. In this part, there is upbeat “funky” music. We will connect with others in the room through various elements, such as partnering, dancing in a circle, or leading one another. Third, we connect our physical body with our emotions. The music is more powerful and may evoke a range of feelings. During this section, we also engage in processes and rituals that allow for transformation to occur. We may have a fire ceremony where we release what no longer serves us or rituals allowing us to tune into our inner wisdom. Fourth, there are intentional practices that allow us to call in our own power, manifest what we want for our lives, and tune into our heart energy. The final section of the class moves to a much slower pace as we turn inward. It is about connecting to something larger than ourselves, integrating the experiences from the class, and resting while being supported by the earth.

I’m not a dancer, can i still participate?

Absolutely! All bodies are welcome. You need no dance experience to participate. JourneyDance® is about discovering your own way of moving. How you move will look very different than anyone else because it’s an expression of who you are. Your movement might look really different from one day to the next and may evolve as you continue to practice.

Who can come to a Journeydance class?

In short, anyone! I have had participants of all ages from those in their 20’s to 80’s. People of all gender identities are welcome as are people of every shape, size, and ability level. It’s truly for everyone!
